One of the most legendary shipyard companies in the world is Hallberg-Rassy (HR). The yard is famous for creating high-quality and solid blue water sailing yachts. These boats have been tried and tested over decades and one of our favorite brands. The yard is located on the west coast of Sweden.
The company is focusing on producing large premium sailing yachts today, but many of the boats in the earlier production series can still be found at a rather affordable price. The quality is still there in every detail and even though produced almost 50 years ago, many of the boats are still in excellent condition.
In this article, we will be focusing on the timeless classic Monsun 31 by Hallberg-Rassy. The boat was produced between the 1974-1982 and 904 boats were produced in total. That means that this boat is the best-seller of all time for HR. Most of the boats were sold in Sweden and Germany and therefore easiest to find in the secondary market. The boat is characterized by the robust build quality and famous for its many long voyages around the world by owners of the boat.
When Monsun 31 was launched in the market, it was not regarded as a modern boat. The design is timeless and focuses on functionality and solid quality. It is exactly these factors that have been so appreciated by sailors all around the world.
The boat Is rather slow in low wind-speeds but can withstand even the roughest waters. It is a boat without any compromises.
Sailing the boat is a spectacular feeling. The hull breaks the waves with strength and very sturdy to sail. No waves or winds feel too powerful for this boat. It sails perfectly over the ocean and able to maintain a steady course, that is what the boat was built for. Surprisingly, it is not designed for the Swedish waters with its many islands where you must tack and change course often. It is designed for blue waters.
The boat has a long keel made of iron. The rudder sits against the back of the boat and well protected. The hull is made of sprayed single laminate in well-sized dimensions, which contribute it its total weight. The mast stands on the deck and has a strong profile. The risk of mast failure is very low, but it also means that the possibility of trimming the sails are somewhat limited.
The interior of the boat is characterized by its many wood details. It has a decent living space for its size without offering anything extra. It is well designed and functional. A family of four to five people has everything they need. The boat has a proper navigation table and a saloon for family dinners.
Due to the build quality is an immensely popular boat to own. The boat has maintained its value over time despite that the last new boat was produced in the ’80s. The average cost depends as always on the condition of the boat, but the price range is normally between 150k -300k Euros.
This boat is perfect as an affordable boat for the long journeys across the five oceans.
